About TAKASHIMA Bluefin Tuna

About Tuna Farming

Bluefin tuna farming starts from fishing juveniles. For stable procurement, our company farms juveniles caught in Wakayama, Shimane, and Nagasaki Prefectures to realize stable supply.

Procurement of juveniles

Troll Fishing

Juveniles weighing around 300g
can be captured by trolling.
Trolling fishermen,
who secure these juvenile fish,
are our essential business partners.

Juveniles purchased from troll fishers are cultivated for around 2 weeks in fish cages.

Live fish carrier vessels carrying the juveniles make the two day trip to Takashima.

Purse Seine Fishing

Amidst fishing regulations on
bluefin tuna, supplying juvenile tuna
to our company allows purse seine fleets to take part in a
new sustainable initiative
to protect tuna populations while maintaining their business.

Bigger juveniles from purse seine vessels are transferred to our cages.

Juveniles caught by purse seine fishing are towed in cages to Takashima.

Arrival at Takashima

At Takashima, juveniles are put into 40m diameter cages and farmed for about three and a half years.

Feed management

Our company uses fresh, locally-caught mackerel, sardines, and other baitfish with certificates of origin for feed. As a tuna farm, we hold the sole food safety management certification, ISO 22000.

Feed consists of fresh mackerel caught in Matsuura City, Nagasaki Prefecture. At full maturity, the tuna consume 60 tons of feed in a single day.

Air guns are used to shoot fresh mackerel into the water as feed. It takes three and a half years for juveniles to grow into fully mature tuna weighing over 50kg.
